I felt that I should come by after watching the first episode of Season 2, because The Orville's writers truly nailed it with the premiere. Excellent humor, a touch of nostalgia, but even more than those things they've really put in the work to focus on character development. It's rare for me to say this but I really like every single one of the characters in this cast. We retain a bit of Seth's silliness with the Ja'loja ceremony (but why not? he's an alien!) and the spying on his ex... but both were funny and not drawn out. Based on how the characters are all gelling together, I can see this show really coming into its own rather than just being a parody or an homage. It will stay both, for sure, but this can also very easily develop into a beloved and long-running sci-fi show with its own unique universe. Expand

Am 3 episodes in and having alot of fun. Wasn't sure whether it was possible with a break some of the 'magic' found with s1 would be lost but am pleasantly surprised to find that good sci-fi storytelling is the core of the show! Highly recommend the Orville for any fan of sci-fi.

I love it, its wonderfully original, inventive, funny and perfectly captures the upbeat positive spirit of the old Star Trek TV shows. The humour is spot on and the stories so far have been hugely original. I haven't seen anything like it before and am looking forward to future seasons. Seth McFarlane has really done well with this show. The actors are all also great and work really well together. Its my favourite show at the moment. Expand

Space exploration mixes with characters, their problems and a good slice of humor. Many social problems come forward, presented through the lens of sci-fi. My top moment so far, was the approach for porn addiction, coming from the aspect of an alien race, which was simply ingenious. Do not expect a comedy, or parody show. It's not supposed to be one and it isn't one. Expand

The miscasting of most ofThe show is juvenile and the (few) jokes tend to fall flat, are amazingly predictable, as are the story elements. The miscasting of most of the crew as well as the logical dissonance between them acting that disfunctionally while surviving the rigors of space is far too much of a suspension of disbelief. Talla (Szohr) replacing Xelayan (Sage) was a terrible casting mistake. She is nearly as frail looking (physically) but does not have the same presence, so the void is palpable.

In season two it does hit some points where it is just copying just enough elements of past ST episodes (across all series to avoid copyright charges) and achieves moments of respectability. However those rare episodes are destroyed with ones like A Happy Refrain (episode 6).

I miss the promise of the series premier when the only truly memorable joke was told (anti-banana ray), and the only real comedic action was taken (killed a ship with tree). Since then it has been all downhill. For the shills handing out 10s, if this is so great why are the viewer numbers closing in on the cancellation range? The numbers never lie, and at this rate the show will be axed by Fox, never seeing season three. I know I am not going to waste any more time hoping MacFarlane can figure out what kind of a show he wants to make. At this stage, I think the South Park joke of Seth using "idea balls" to create random story points are far more likely. That he is using a tank of Manatee to combine them is still pretty unlikely.

"Does it work on salad?" - Last great Orville joke so far (Season 1 episode 1)

Still a pale ripoff of Star Trek and not a good parody or imitation in any case.
