Space Hulk Tactics take the best of the board game and turns it into a pretty cool game.

A deep and involving combat system makes the game a delight to play, and the number of ways an objective can be achieved ensures that no two missions are ever alike. With the whole back story to be explored, the package on offer here makes me very happy indeed; it’s just a shame the online is pretty much dead.

Space Hulk: Tactics is certainly true to the ethos of the original board game, with some smart card-based additions, a full Genestealer campaign and a full on level editor. That said, it’s only liable to be long-serving franchise fans that get the most out of it.

Space Hulk: Tactics falls over a little when it comes to its campaign and progression system, but over all it earns a recommendation from us for fans of the genre. For more detail, read on.

True to the world of Warhammer 40.000, Space Hulk: Tactics is a cool tactical-RPG but it never surprised us, because of its many very classical mechanics.

Space Hulk: Tactics tries to combine turn-based strategy games with the classic board game. Two campaigns with a good progression system that does not reach the level of other games of this genre. However, the game offers a wide variety of options to enjoy the multiplayer mode with a complete mission editor, but the game could be too slow and limited for many fans of the strategy.

In the end Space Hulk: Tactics also has the appeal of its premise and works better as an experience played with others whilst also designing missions and various layouts. Much like the origins of Space Hulk it feels true to the tabletop roots of the series - but also lacking in its limited scope.

The user interface is well done and easy to learn. The mission builder is also well done allowing for many different options and additions. The new tactics card deck is also a real plus. Some may think the game only appeals to Space Hulk fanatics, but that certainly isn't the case. It's an excellent turn-based tactical wargame that should appeal to a wide range of gamers, not just 40K or Space Hult fans. Expand

In terms of content the game has a decent amount for you to get to grips with and fans of the franchise will no doubt be satisfied with what’s on offer. There is a decent amount of tactical elements present in the game and this does make things more fun because it keeps things unpredictable and fresh. The game has been optimised brilliantly on the Xbox One and I was very impressed with how smooth and responsive the controls were. In my opinion the text in the game is a little on the small side and I did struggle to read it from time to time. This game still has a very niche vibe and it’s not going to bring any new fans to the table which is a shame. Sometimes the gameplay can throw up a few annoying issues which can harm the fun factor a little at times. Overall the Space Hulk franchise is one that I’m very fond of and whilst it may not be for everybody I can see the new game Space Hulk: Tactics satisfying quite a lot of people who are fans of the series. It is however not perfect and some of its shortcomings can be pretty frustrating but on the whole it does get the most important aspects correct. It also excels in areas I didn’t expect it to excel in as well and for me the most surprising thing it did so well was its presentation. Both the visuals and sound design have been done extremely well and if they had made the text a little bigger then for me the presentation would’ve been perfect. In terms of content the game has a lot for you to get to grips with and whilst the gameplay does throw up a few annoying issues like the fiddly camera I must admit that I was impressed with how well the game has been optimised on the Xbox One. This then means that Space Hulk: Tactics does more than enough to get a recommendation from me and if you’re a fan of the series this game is a must buy. Expand
