This is just a very linear story, lined with tropes, passing as realistic art....devoid of any charm and poetry with very simplistic one-sided characters. I can only imagine how distraught the original writer must feel of this adaptation.
If you want Italian realism of the post-world area, better rewatch Rocco and his brothers or any other Visconti or De Sica or Rosselini. There, you can find the poignancy of the Italian working class of the time.

In truth, it's a boring story, with stereotypical characters and situations. Shouldn't Jewish NYers roll their eyes at the clichés spewed on screen about NY Jews? Plus, the jokes? What jokes? They fall flat. Stopped after two episodes.… Expand

It's a very simplistic and rehashed story of a "them" conspiracy about government agencies/contractors and army vets.
All the clichés of the genre are here, of course, to comfort the average middle-class viewer. The worst is the use of the ominous scores and camera framing of the 1970 Tv shows. Just like these shows that were trying to hype tension where there was none in the script or action, this artifice is no longer in use in serious thrillers where character nuances, analysis and psychology are vastly superior (Better Call Saul or Patriot).
As other reviewers have pointed out this show could have been wrapped up in 2 hours, and not be milked for the ten hours. Completely useless dialogues that repeat things the viewer has seen 2 or 3 times are par for the course for our ADHD internet generation, I guess (ironic since this show is about erasing memories).
On the acting part Cannavale plays again the same insufferable douche he's always been playing. Julia Roberts is lost in this as a reverse Erin Brokovich.
In short, this show is the modern pendant of those little novellas that were sold in train stations in the 1950s. Little escapism, little "what if the government?", but ultimately end up being forgotten in a couple of weeks.… Expand

It's the first TV show that goes into an almost surrealistic explosion of cinematographic joy without falling into the idiotic and nonsensical. It is teetering between lightness and depression, the comical and the dramatic in very delightful and nuanced tones. The script, the dialogues, the richness of the characters, the acting and the refined, sharp cinematography all push clichés and tropes aside to deliver a new unique piece of art. Real art, not binge TV.
That puts shows like bloated, self-important and pontificating shows like Fargo or The Americans (referred to by other critics) miles behind.
The only problem is the atrociously bad French of the supposedly Luxembourgeois characters. I hope this will be fixed for season 2.… Expand

Average User Score: 7.8Oct 15, 2018This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It seems the rules of horror have been lost on this young generation of writers, directors and viewers: "Scary things" should not be directly shown but hinted at. It's the doubt, unknown, the "maybe it's true" that creates the horror!
The show was humming along nicely until the final twist of ep 1, the little sister was dead and turned into a ghost. Netflix resorts to showing how the girl slowly turns into a dark evil spirit thanks to very expensive special effects. Expensive effects but lazy thinking!
And like that the show became boring unless you are under 13 physically or mentally speaking.
This is the curse of this very overrated Stranger Things show with that ridiculous monster.… Expand

What this show manage to achieve is to turn this would-be Dexter character into a narcissistic bore. Also, funnily, the lead female character becomes even more unlikable and unlovable than him after episode 3. That is a major tour de force! Just watch those 3 episodes.

Eric Cartmann is officially the greatest satirical character in America. It is incredible that only through an animated character can someone say the truth about a movie, just because of "racial" or "PC"paralysis. Black Panther is utter crap. It is obvious but a Colbert or a Seth Meyer doesn't have the balls to say it...anymore!
It is amazing that only South Park, only this single show, can find the finesse to take on this topic. All the rest of American culture is so desperately "manichean" as we say in French (black or white).
On the negative side, the school shooting stuff was drawn out by 15 minutes in that first episode.… Expand
