Deeply personal and equally moving, Believer documents Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds' crusading campaign on behalf of LGBTQ rights, in direct conflict with the teachings of the Mormon Church under which he was raised.

Argott, whose credits include another strong music-oriented doc, 2011’s “Last Days Here,” absorbingly captures Reynolds’ journey of self-discovery exploring the troubling intersection between Mormonism and the LGBTQ community. ... Throughout, Reynolds approaches the range of people and issues he encounters with warmth, candor and earnest support. ... Argott vibrantly captures the highlights of LoveLoud in all its joyously musical and deeply emotional glory.

A sweetly earnest new documentary. ... I suspect it’s Reynolds’s humility--his awareness of how little he knows about the gay experience, and his willingness to learn--that keeps a film in his thrall from feeling focused on the wrong story.

As a movie it's OK, with very little worth raving about. As a story and message, though, it feels important and worth getting out there in as swift and mainstream a way as possible.

For all its honesty, something feels slightly off throughout the film; as if we’re seeing only a fraction of the personal turmoil. Reynolds’s anguish is a bit polished and his answers are all easy.
