Jun 6, 2018ye really does what a self-titled album should do: it says “Hey, this is who I am.” Even at 23 minutes, it almost feels like two different albums: an aggressive, dissonant one, and an empathetic, soulful one. Yet, those aren’t the two sides of Kanye, because those things exist in him simultaneously, all the time.
Jun 4, 2018Despite its sometimes grating protagonist, ye is a pleasant enough way to pass half an hour. Seven tracks is long enough to develop an idea without wearing it out. The production is typically lush. Kanye has returned to the kinds of soul samples that made him famous to begin with.
Jun 4, 2018Over a brief seven tracks, the 40-year-old superstar confirms his production prowess, veering between sparse, hyper-modern styles and compositions which hark back to the soulful bent of the producer-turned-rapper’s early career; a volatile mix of the sweet and the acrid, the sentimental and the tendentious.
Jun 6, 2018Ye doesn’t feel like that reinvention. If anything, this album feels safe, a word I imagine is insulting to the artist. ... However, Kanye has an incredible ear for production, more apparent on Pusha T’s DAYTONA. There are some excellent moments on Ye, but with only twenty-four minutes of music, some doesn’t cut it.
Jun 12, 2018His verses mostly feel redundant, hastily thrown together to validate the presence of these songs on his project, and while the album has been described as introspective this very brief release only allows for skindeep thoughts on any one topic. The Kanye West show has already rolled on, but some of the magic of yesteryear has been left behind.

From the haunting opening track to the masterfully constructed Ghost Town, this is far and away the best album of the year thus far. He is able to say everything he needs to in the 7 tracks and is perhaps the most intimate, vulnerable Ye we have ever seen. Even more so than 808s and it works brilliantly in this case.… Expand

This is by far the most personal album I think Kanye has ever created and it brings awareness to the effects of mental illness. We now understand that Kanye is dealing with an illness that severely alters his way of thinking and he's not afraid to expose it. Songs like Yikes confronts his feelings about his illness calling it a "super power". Ghost Town is the best track on the album, having a soulful/rock anthem that gets stuck in your head. Now that we know more about the real Ye , let's pray that his treatment helps him figure things out.… Expand
Jun 2, 2018One of West's most personal albums since 2008s 808s and heartbreaks or my dark beautiful twisted fantasy. Opening with a half spoken wordOne of West's most personal albums since 2008s 808s and heartbreaks or my dark beautiful twisted fantasy. Opening with a half spoken word piece that is a rambling about West's dark thoughts not a new topic for him but it's handled differently in a sincere but morbid way. "I thought about killing you" is a amazing opening track but falls short in delivery in the actual songs verses with long winded and lackluster bars, which is sadly a problem for most of the actual rapping done by west on this album. Thankfully this album takes ideas from 2016s "Ultralight Beam" and is much more focused on production guest spots and that while sonically pleasing makes this a bit disappointing to fans of Wests rapping skills there is some bars on this album that are unbelievably pleasing such as the half sung half rapped verses of "ghost town" that is reminiscent of bound 2 production wise or "violent crimes" sincere verses about West being worried about his daughter. This album is a mixed bag that truly has amazing moments but the lackluster rapping truly hinders this album I would've liked them to be cut and just be sung for most of this album. I truly think this album had amazing potentially I hope this album is remixed and mastered again like the life of Pablo however in it's current state songs like "yikes" and "all mine" have awful verses with no delivery and it dosent have the charisma or bravado of West's previous works.… Expand
