A mind-boggling host of collaborators are along for the ride yet the album-- including Bhasker, Malay (Frank Ocean, Zayn), Rostam (Vampire Weekend), Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, Eminem, Bruno Mars), even Skrillex--and the vision never feel like they’re anyone’s but hers, and the title track, “Deep End,” “Sex Money Feelings Die” and especially “Last Piece” and “Utopia” are easily among the best songs she’s ever done.

While this might not be the most pivotal ‘sad pop’ record from someone who arguably coined the genre, it can stand toe-to-toe with the best of them and few albums have ever been as appropriately named as so sad so sexy.

so sad so sexy is an unusual blend of pop and R&B inspiration, but it's not a memorable album. Lykke Li scratches the bare surface of the talent she possesses, making you wish there was just a little more ener

Lykke Li’s fourth album, So Sad So Sexy, is more introverted and meditative than her previous efforts.

There's a distance in these songs. Keeping the audience at arm's length ensures that the album won't get bogged down in pain, even as it willingly swims in that pain. While that distance also results in a slightly ephemeral experience, the result is mood music that works as well as a breakup album as it does a warm-up for the club.

It's actually not a terrible record, really, but it's frustratingly complacent after two outstanding albums.

Deeply layered, So sad So sexy is indeed Li's boldest move yet. A clever, relevant and contemporary collection of pop tunes. The swedishDeeply layered, So sad So sexy is indeed Li's boldest move yet. A clever, relevant and contemporary collection of pop tunes. The swedish musician shows us once again that versatility is her keyword. And of course, when Frank Ocean figures on the credits, we can expect the finest production we can get. In a scene of Trap that's getting saturated with mediocre works, Li's 2018 rendition stands as a strong and consistent body of work. The album is too short, which is a shame. Must-listen tracks: "Two Nights", "Better Alone", "Hard Rain". Expand

After the break-up album I Never Learn (2014), Lykke Li is finally back at it again with more love songs–this time with a new sound. 'so sadAfter the break-up album I Never Learn (2014), Lykke Li is finally back at it again with more love songs–this time with a new sound. 'so sad so sexy' is her most electronic release, diving into trap-influenced production and more manipulated vocals.

The opening track "hard rain" is a gorgeous example of how she keeps these new influences in balance with her songwriting craft. Some of the high-pitched vocals bring FKA Twigs to mind. The ballad is some of her best material to date. Another highlight is the closing track "utopia" with its haunting chorus that turns nightmarish in the end.

"two nights" is one of the warmer tracks; a nice switch-up that features a rap verse by Aminé. The album's title track is more typical for her–a synth pop anthem with a strong chorus.

But not everything is compelling. The trap bangers "deep end" and "sex money feelings" are catchy but rather generic–the same goes for "jaguars in the air".

On this album, the lyrics are strong, most of the time–with "bad woman" being the exception. Lykke Li knows this territory of of love and heartbreak. 'so sad so sexy' is a fitting title–the album is sensual, attractive and drained in sadness, though not as much as the fantastic predecessor I Never Learn. Here, Lykke Li goes more with the times and tries out new forms and styles but doesn't quite nail every single one.
