Nasir comes closest to being an unqualified success. Those still hoping for the return of ruthless adolescent Nasty Nas will be disappointed--although recent allegations of spousal abuse from ex-wife Kelis cast a troubling shadow--but his voice is thick with middle-aged grit and gravitas. There are some slight missteps, like West’s tedious hook on Everything, but Nasir proves Nas’ ongoing relevance as one of New York’s biggest living rappers, with the best overall production and best quality control since Illmatic: the curse may finally be lifting.

The writing is so meandering and mechanical that little here feels intentional, even the gaps. And strangely, that’s the bittersweet takeaway: Nas the meticulous observer has been supplanted by Nas the nervous rambler. It doesn’t feel like an accident.

Nasir is among the weakest Nas albums, but there’s nothing spectacular about its failure. It is, simply, the one thing Nas has avoided being all these years, through revolutionary highs and car-crash lows: dull.

A prevailing quantity of the tracks is either forgettable or regrettable. Nas often sounds unenthused.

Although its brighter moments ("Adam and Eve," "Cops Shot the Kid") save it from being a complete fall from grace, overall Nasir is disappointingly heedless. Hopefully his next effort is more honest.

It all rings hollow due to how thinly sketched out the writing and production is. Much of it is awkward, directionless, and, at times, just confusing--showing an artist grasping at a million ideas and hoping to grab one, with none of it being done in any interesting or shrewd way.

Nasir feels like the ultimate definition of this statement yet at times it feels as if Nas is keeping himself from expressing his full thoughts to his greatest potential. The production is great, Kanye did his best to match beats that would suit Nas but as it seems as any other project touched by Kanye this summer. Sometimes Ye has unintentionally outshined the main event leaving Nas with an empty slate of what could have been. This album is no illmatic, it is no God's son. It's unique and great in it's own world. However, for any fan who loves Nas for what has made him great in the past can see why Nasir has left me feeling empty and expecting a little more than what we were given. Expand

Nas has some really nice flows at points (everything, Adam & Eve) but doesn't say a whole lot unfortunately; no mention of the Kelis allegations and when he does speak on certain topics he does it in a bit of a surface level & hollow way. The beats are decent but nowhere near the quality of Ye's other Wyoming records (he definitely saved all the gems for Push). This record had some real high expectations to meet, following up Kids See Ghosts, and sadly neither Nas or Kanye brought their A game.

Favorite tracks: Cops Shot The Kid (feat. Kanye West), everything (feat. The-Dream & Kanye West)

Nas' performance wasn't great either. He sound so bored on this album, nothing he says holds any value because he can barely get the words out his own mouth. He is rapping so slow on every track and slow flow Nas has never been great.

It sounds like Nas laid the verses to completely different beats and Kanye spend a week or two producing the album without Nas being involved.
