It’s arguably the most modern score he’s ever composed, cutting with a minimalistic edge that might make Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross blush. Even so, the score never loses that Carpenter charm, keeping a tight grip on its origins without sneezing from all the dust.

The record as a whole is consistently atmospheric, often mixing evocative, industrial-sounding percussion with Carpenter's pulsing synthesizer. This is a legend being granted the ability to go back and take another crack at one of his most enduring works, and it's clear he's relished the opportunity. You'll not find a scarier record to celebrate the season.

Fans of the old soundtrack will find much to love in the new interpretations, and coming from such iconic source material, Carpenter couldn’t really fail. With any luck, the new movie will measure up to the soundtrack and the high expectations that fans of the original movie have for it.

While familiar-sounding, the soundtrack brings something new to the table instead of being a pointless retread, and in general, it just sounds amazing. Definitely worthwhile for any Carpenter or Halloween fans.

Carpenter is working in service to his own nostalgia, and he understands intuitively what his score is here to do. It is not meant to be frightening. It is meant to make you feel warm and fuzzy things about John Carpenter, about the first time you saw the original Halloween.

The music here is icier, more gothic and more textured than that of the original. The main theme gets a disco beat and some echoes here and there, but the trio really shines when it steps out of Michael Myers’ looming shadow.

Shorn of its images, Carpenter’s score for David Gordon Green’s reboot of the Halloween franchise is oddly aimless. There’s the instant jolt of recognition: that simple piano phrase is resurrected, and given a steroidal boost, its famous 5/4 rhythm now underpinned with a sturdy kickdrum. But after that the music hardly seems to build in intensity, or riff off each other; there are certainly no new hooks or textures that sear the listening ear like the first. [Nov 2018, p.53]

An invigorating soundtrack and at the same time a soundtrack that recalls the original 1978 film.
It really is one of the best of the year.
