The sun-kissed Laurel Canyon pop of "Dangerous Place" tackles the push and pull of creative collaboration, neatly summarizing Burch's modus operandi: wide-open sonic aesthetics with a pointed and poignant message behind it.

Like Peggy Lee, Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin and others, Molly Burch is a chanteuse, exploring the edges of noir songs with beauty, sadness, and an honest vulnerability that’s powerful yet strikingly understated.
  3. Oct 12, 2018
Molly Burch’s debut saw her emerge as one of the finest songwriters around, and the follow up only cements that.

First Flower feels like a reclusive album emotionally, lyrically, and musically--but it’s one that actively strives to break through. It feels like being trapped inside your own thoughts, battling with the kinds of choices that incrementally alter your life on a daily basis.
  5. Oct 12, 2018
First Flower builds on where last year's blue winter debut Please Be Mine left off, but with the edges polished and dusted for a brighter sheen. Burch still occupies her old stomping ground of romantic pining, but she works in a few clever twists.
  6. Oct 4, 2018
Taken together, the record's simple ballroom dance rhythms, memorable melodies, and nuanced performances are a recipe for pop confection, however unhappy.

There are moments of brilliance--the title track features a stunning guitar section, while Every Little Thing is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-forgiveness--yet First Flower occasionally fails to live up to its predecessor. [Nov 2018, p.102]

She’s incredible! I discovered her thanks to TiDAL Rising, and this album is truly exceptional.
