Coup De Grace is Kane’s best work to date: punchy, cohesive and lots of fun.

It’s perhaps unpromising to think of Kane, hardly recognised for his emotional range, swooning his way through a breakup, but his one-size-fits-all showmanship holds it together, from Killing the Joke’s daydream synth balladry to Cry on My Guitar’s pouty glam-up. There’s also plenty that flounders.

Named after a match-winning wrestling move, Coup De Grace isn’t quite going to do that, but it’ll get Miles through to the next round

Coup De Grace has plenty to offer, but it’s not a big step forward from Kane’s previous solo work. If you liked that you’ll probably like this; if you didn’t, this probably won’t change your mind.

Coup De Grace may not radically change skeptics' perception of Kane as Turner's lesser-half. ... But dig deeper and you'll find Kane's finest work so far. [Sep 2018, p.86]

Loaded sounds like a Last Shadow Puppets album filler, right down to the Turner-ish vocal delivery while others such as Wrong Side Of Life are hopelessly overwrought. [Sep 2018, p.114]

The album’s sole achievement is its brevity.

This album is a thrilling, upbeat exercise in punk rock that feels like a refresher in the genre. Songs like Cold Light of the Day, SomethingThis album is a thrilling, upbeat exercise in punk rock that feels like a refresher in the genre. Songs like Cold Light of the Day, Something To Rely On, and Too Little Too Late are exciting fast paced rockers that make you feel like you could take on the world. Songs like Shavambacu and Cry On My Guitar are classic feeling rock songs that make you want to walk around town in glittery platform shoes, long hair and a bandana. Lastly, the slower songs like Loaded and Killing The Joke round out this album, making it feel whole with nice little emotional breaths of air. Expand
