Making perfect pop isn’t easy, but Troye Sivan is a star who’s done his homework. With one foot in pop’s past and another in its present, Bloom is a record that could turn its considerate maker into one of mainstream music’s most revered and fascinating talents.

Here, Sivan has created an album that does away with any apology; instead it sees him seize happiness with both hands.

Bloom is an exceptional pop album, but maybe more importantly it’s a beacon for queer people who struggle to reconcile our neuroses--societal and personal--with our potential for joy and love.

Occasionally sentimental but always endearing, it's impressive stuff. [Oct 2018, p.116]

At a taut ten tracks, Bloom is an unambiguous statement from Sivan, clear in its intent to celebrate the highs and lows of queer love through the eyes of a proud pop star in the making.

The results are characterful. Bloom is done and dusted in 35 crisp minutes – a time at which some pop albums are reaching their mid-point--and feels like a coherent, artist-led album rather than a bet-spreading collection of songs designed to hit every popular musical base.

The songs that leave the most lasting impression are the most downbeat.

Seventeen is purely bop and a great opening track, and so far my favorite. I think it's wise for him to release Bloom and Animal as promotional singles, since those two represent the album well and definitely two of the best track on the album. I hope he'll get Best Pop Vocal Album nod in 2019 Grammy, along with reputation, sweetener, The Thrill of It All, Meaning of Life, and Beautiful Trauma. Expand

There's only one good song on the album-Animal-and even then it's more just good within the context of an awful album rather than good when stacked against other projects. The most frustrating thing about the album is that you sense there was potential here-and indeed, Blue Neighborhood showcases Troye's undeniable talent. That talent is invisible on this record. If you thoguht Troye was uncharismatic on BN, he's a brick wall here, unmoving, uncommitted to whatever he happens to be seeing about. The lyrics are as basic as can be. Only a few are outright cringey, but they're bad all the same. The production is the true saving grace here but with a performer who sounds so bored, the life is sucked out of the songs before they can even find their footing. Expand
