Story, voice work, and animations are all still goofy, but throw in co-op multiplayer, better endgame content, and more reasons to replay it, and State of Decay 2 is the type of game with which certain players will fall in love. There's always something to do and in a classically sim style, it's hard to know when to stop. It's the most realistic zombie apocalypse simulation in the world and that's a beautiful thing.
  2. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is a huge step up from its predecessor. There’s a large and diverse variety of content within, all of which is upheld by well developed systems, fluid gameplay and easy to understand functionality. This isn’t going to be for everyone, however, there’s no denying that despite its niggling issues and bugs, it’s easily one of the best Microsoft exclusives in recent memory. It’s tense, action-packed and thoroughly entertaining.
  3. May 28, 2018
State of Decay 2 proves to be better than the first chapter in all aspects despite the limitations of the new multiplayer mode. On Xbox One it's weaker on the technical side, but the price is great in all cases.
  4. May 17, 2018
If you're a fan of The Walking Dead, zombies, survival horror games, open world action adventure games, then without question State of Decay 2 is a day one purchase.
  5. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is not the most original game. Or the most polished. However, it is the most exciting zombie game since the first game, as well as the best Xbox One-exclusive in a very long time.
  6. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 improves upon its predecessor in almost every way. Although the game still suffers from a host of bugs and lacks much of a focused narrative, it succeeds at being a tremendously enjoyable and addictive experience.
  7. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 greatly improves on the first game thanks to wider and more varied environments, great world simulation and character progression systems, better graphics and UI and finally a satisfying co-op mode. It won't satisfy lovers of strong, meaningful stories, but it's definitely one of the best and more enduring survival games around, and a game that lovers of the genre should absolutely have.
  8. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 has some technical issues, but apart from these you will find a game that is bigger than its predecessor in almost every aspect.
  9. May 17, 2018
Too bad for a technical section that is at times really problematic, which fortunately cannot tarnish the excellent qualities of this sequel: a title that fans should play without hesitation.

An imperfect but thoughtful game that demands time, and will reward you by eating it up. [Aug 2018, p.71]
  11. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is in essence the same as the first game, with the anecdotic incorporation of the multiplayer. But Undead Labs achieves a brilliant mix combining all those ideas once again. Despite falling short on its technical side, the game has a great artistic design.
  12. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is imperfect, but it's still a very good time. The presentation may not be up to snuff and the AI can be a hindrance, but the overall experience is fulfilling enough that you'll overlook those shortcomings. There aren't many games that execute the community aspect so well or are as accessible to those who aren't deeply into survival titles.
  13. May 17, 2018
While it doesn’t have the irreverent humor of Dead Rising or the swiftness in movement like Dying Light, what State of Decay 2 offers is the pull that will have you saying, “Oooh, what’s in there?” every time you walk down a neighborhood cluttered with burnt-out cars and piles of dead bodies.
  14. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 takes the best things from the first game and powers up the mechanics to create a very interesting survival and management game. It has some problems and the multiplayer is not what we expected, but it is surprisingly addictive and very attractive for zombie lovers.
  15. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is by no means a perfect game. It retains the quirks of its predecessor, complete with mixed production values and a litany of smaller problems. That said, the game has never crashed on me, and is wonderfully atmospheric, with great music, sound, and masterful use of lighting to create fear and tension.
  16. May 17, 2018
Its surfeit of busywork does it no favours, but if you can immerse yourself enough in the game to overlook that, you'll find that State of Decay 2 offers more than enough to quench your shambler-smashing, apocalypse-braving thirst.
  17. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is the classic "more of the same" sequel which, however, thanks to some interesting innovations and a deep game formula, does not disappoint.
  18. May 17, 2018
Undead’s follow up doesn’t reinvent the wheel – nor provide a fully polished experience despite a move from CryEngine to Unreal Engine 4 – but does offer a marked improvement over the original.
  19. May 17, 2018
State Of Decay 2 is a game that is committed to enhancing everything that its predecessor offered us. The new additions take the game to a new level, making it one of the best survival games you can find on Xbox One these days.
  20. May 19, 2018
The core gameplay is still great, and State of Decay 2 continues to offer the absorbing survival experience of the first entry. The co-op mode, its biggest addition, is a little bit flawed and disappointing.
  21. May 23, 2018
State of Decay 2 offers amazing tools to write your own story of loss, human failure and the power of hope. Every time you leave your post, you end up in a very exciting, thrilling journey, which unfortunately is pestered with bugs.
  22. May 17, 2018
If you were hoping for groundbreaking changes to the horror survival formula and pristine technical accomplishments, you will be disappointed. Nevertheless, for a bargain retail price, and as a launch title for subscribers of the Xbox Game Pass, it’s definitely worth of a look while keeping some change in your pocket.

Generally State of Decay 2 looks more like a remaster of the original game than a true sequel. It just does not expand the formula enough and still contains too many repetitive activities that make you go through the motions for the sake of getting it done. That’s why I recommend playing it in short sessions. I have no doubt that people unfamiliar with the first State of Decay will enjoy the second one much more, as everything will be new to them. [07/2018, p.70]
  24. May 17, 2018
Deeper than the first installment, State of Decay 2 improves several features and adds a deeper management system with an enormous map to explore and an interesting cooperative online system, though it still has several technical issues.
  25. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2’s zombie-infested maps are good places to scavenge, fight, and survive in. Combat is satisfyingly brutal and the special zombies inspire some real fear of permanent death, even though the Blood Plague turns out to be more of a sniffle. But the bugs are just as persistent as the zombies, and after a dozen or so hours the repetition of both eventually take their toll, making the appeal of replaying feel more limited than I’d expected for a sandbox RPG.
  26. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 builds upon Undead Labs’ original cult classic about surviving a zombie apocalypse, and in many ways, it’s bigger and better than its predecessor. In other ways, however, it’s too similar to said predecessor, resulting in an experience that often feels like it could have been deeper or more ambitious.

    Jun 17, 2018
The core gameplay loop may grow monotonous, and a devilish slow of bugs threatens to disrupt it at any moment, but State of Decay 2 remains an entertaining vehicle for the emergent stories that materialise from its anomalous blend of zombie slaying, base building, and interpersonal drama. [July 2018, p.58]
  28. Jun 1, 2018
State of Decay 2 feels like a pretty run-of-the-mill sequel. It packs in more while refining less. The addition of co-op is great, I just wish they would have focused more on streamlining and cleaning up some of its technical issues. Still with this game free in Game Pass and only carrying a $30 price tag I feel like it lives up to expectations. For those that enjoyed the original game, this will certainly satisfy. For those that didn’t care for the original’s design, this sequel will not change your mind.
  29. May 29, 2018
State of Decay 2 is an immersive and mechanically interesting zombie-survival gameplay experience - whenever the bugs aren’t plaguing player progress.
  30. 70
A tabletop-style survival sandbox that you can take on alone or with friends, State of Decay 2 packs in enough scavenging fun to make the occasional malfunctioning weapon or levitating enemy easy enough to endure.
  31. May 22, 2018
State of Decay 2 barely takes advantage of the great potential that its predecessor left back in 2013. What we have found almost five years later is practically the same experience, renewed with minor adjustments and with the presence of the cooperative online features.
  32. May 21, 2018
State of Decay 2 is repetitive, but fun when it works. When it doesn’t, you'd be forgiven for a few rage quits. In a game where any misstep can result in losing an important survivor for good, to have this happen not due to my own mistakes, but a bug or glitch, is frustrating.
  33. May 21, 2018
State of Decay 2 is far from a bad game and, in spite of its technical odiousness, it’s just so much fun to play. Offering more of what made the series great in the first place, fans of the original will be more than satisfied. Newer players might be harder to impress though, as their truck somersaults gaily through the air and they ultimately quit in frustration.
  34. 70
If you can put up with a game that isn’t quite state of the industry when it comes to visual fidelity and performance, there’s a fun zombie survival game underneath it all.
  35. May 17, 2018
There’s something about it that keeps you coming back, whether that’s the fun exploration or simply going on a quest to clear a few houses of infestations and then loot all the cupboards and drawers for goodies. But above all that it does nail the combat side, where headshots feel great as does getting up close with a machete. Gruesome and fun zombie-apocalypse survival, but also bug-ridden and poorly optimised.
  36. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is a nice game and it looks good, but it has a considerable amount of errors that take away much of its brightness. It is nice that the events that happen within your game are a consequence of the actions of each player, given that feeling that each of their actions is unrepeatable. Spending most of the game looking for resources in coolers, kitchens, farms and other places, is annoying and saps much of the fun that can be as the game becomes a slow and repetitive activity.
  37. May 17, 2018
An improvement on the original, and with far more variety on offer, but State of Decay 2 suffers from repetitive combat and poor player communication throughout. Fans of survival sims will likely appreciate the greater attention to detail and increased demands when it comes to sustaining your communities, but for more casual players the constant need to find dozens of items or resources just to keep everything ticking over will just annoy, the longer you go on.
  38. May 17, 2018
If you can deal with a healthy dose of bugs, State of Decay 2 is an extremely satisfying and unpredictable management sim with a solid action-survival game laid on top. The sequel's improved UI, new multiplayer component, and additional maps help it stand out from its predecessor, even if the moment-to-moment is largely the same.
  39. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 confidently reaches the series’ potential as the ultimate zombie survival sim, even if it hits a few familiar bumps in the road on the way there.
  40. 70
State of Decay 2 is just as good as the original but fails to make good on its major promises. There’s some great quality of life improvements here and there, but the repetitive goals to work towards and cursory co-op options stop it from being any better than the original. Despite all this, State of Decay 2’s gameplay loop is strangely alluring, but many won’t put up with its technical shortcomings.
  41. May 17, 2018
If you’re looking for a compelling and atmospheric take on the zombie genre that’s more Walking Dead than Left 4 Dead, State of Decay 2 is an imperfect but enjoyable sequel to the superior original. The gameplay loop of scavenging, crafting and killing can begin to wear thin, but the human element is capable of pulling you back in. Tackling the world with others in tow may decimate the game’s carefully constructed atmosphere, but those multiplayer shenanigans will probably be wild enough to distract from the host of technical issues that simply refuse to die.
  42. May 17, 2018
If you were a fan of the original and just want more of that, you'll feel right at home here, but if you were looking for major improvements over its predecessor, you may be left disappointed.
  43. May 30, 2018
State of Decay was the high-water mark for open-world zombie survival, and while State of Decay 2 doesn’t top it thanks to the complete lack of storytelling, it’s a suitable upgrade. The hero system and three maps add replayability to the game, and Undead Labs’ history with the franchise suggests that they’ll get around to fixing many of these problems later. That said, it took them two years and a new platform to finally iron out the first State of Decay — let’s hope this one has a quicker turnaround time.
  44. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 has a lot to love, but it’s overwhelmed by legacy issues and a slew of all-new ones that came along for the co-op ride.
  45. It might be the closest the game industry has yet come to imagining the mix of tension and monotony of routine life in a world of undead.
  46. May 17, 2018
It's quite simple. If you loved the first game, you'll appreciate the changes, like a more structured take on base building and community management. There are fantastic systems, hampered by repetitive and shallow gameplay that ultimately feels pointless. State of Decay 2's scale and lower price don't quite make up for its lack of polish.
  47. Jun 3, 2018
Due to its numerous technical issues and underwhelming gameplay, it’s difficult to give State of Decay 2 a wide recommendation.
  48. May 27, 2018
State of Decay 2 has so much potential that's not fully realized. The simple brutality of combat and the demands of keeping up a base offer noteworthy moments on their own, but that enjoyment is hurt by an array of bugs and a gameplay structure that loses much of its challenge and intrigue far too quickly.
  49. May 21, 2018
State of Decay 2 is brainless, ramshackle fun. Most of its action resembles Benny Hill more closely than The Walking Dead. It doesn’t really deliver what it promises, and in many obvious ways, it’s a mess. Yet lots of messy games are fun, and this is too – especially on those forays when you slaughter zombies by the dozen and rock up home loaded with loot. In scattered moments, there are glimpses of the game State of Decay 2 could have been. Sadly, they are the only times it pulls at your heartstrings.
  50. May 20, 2018
State of Decay 2 is simply so full of bugs that it would make even Bethesda on a bad day blush, and it routinely puts a damper on its players’ investment, whether it be through architectural glitches, poor A.I. (like in the case of Mandy), or just a failure to load the appropriate materials to finish an objective.
  51. May 20, 2018
Just like a new season of The Walking Dead, State of Decay 2 is just more of the same thing. Survival is exciting and makes you use your brain, but technically speaking State of Decay 2 is so bad, lots of fun gets lost.
  52. May 18, 2018
State of Decay 2 is an interesting "post zombie apocalypse life simulator" that forces the player to manage every aspect of a survivor's life. It's too bad that its story isn't very interesting. And what to say about those bugs: there are just so many of them... With better production values, State of Decay could have been a truly special game.
  53. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is a perfectly fine game. Nothing more, nothing less. Sure, it may be buggy and it might be a step back from the original, but it is nevertheless still a fun game, albeit one that doesn’t really motivate you to keep playing. To keep grinding. I imagine it’s what a real zombie apocalypse would be like, we just wanted more from a game about it.
  54. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 has some lovely elements that will make you want to keep playing, and yet others that make you want to turn it off again, so you get caught in a fretful loop of not knowing what to do with yourself. Like some kind of restless corpse shuffling back and forth with no purpose, perhaps…?
  55. May 17, 2018
Based on a high-advanced concept of survival and management, the game unfortunately suffers from rudimentary mechanisms and many blunders. SoD 2 is clearly preferred in multiplayer for more fun.
  56. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 is a flawed game, and it seems to suffer from Microsoft's increased demand for exclusive titles. If it had about six more months or so of development time, it's likely that the tone of this review would be very different.
  57. May 17, 2018
A mainly disappointing sequel, with some glitches that hinder the progress and the fun.
  58. May 17, 2018
With some modifications and continuous work, State of Decay 2 could be a great and meaningful experience, but in its current state, it’s far from the best zombie game out there.
  59. May 30, 2018
State of Decay 2 isn't a failure, it’s a disappointment. Despite some good ideas, the game kind of looks like a copy/paste of the previous game on many points, loaded with glitches and poorly tuned mechanics.
  60. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 has an impressive open world that comes to life in many ways, but lacks a sense of purpose which makes it boring. It’s a shame the game is filled with bugs because the strategic options are a great way to make play sessions unique.

State of Decay 2 falls short of its promise, instead offering the kind of brainless, repetitive experience that turns you into a de facto zombie. [Issue#201, p.80]
  62. May 24, 2018
State of Decay 2 doesn’t flip the script on the themes we’ve come to associate with the zombie apocalypses of our popular entertainments.
  63. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 settles into a rhythm that might be easy for you to pass some hours with, but it’s never a ride with genuine surprises, excitement or purpose. There’s promise in so many systems that it introduces, but they’re woefully underutilized to make space for repetitive activities that are nowhere near as exciting to engage with. State of Decay 2 feels like the lumbering enemies that populate its country mountains. Aimless, wandering, and just out of place.
  64. May 17, 2018
Despite its inventive take on the zombie survival genre, State of Decay 2 struggles with technical issues. Cooperative multiplayer and flexible play may appeal to some, but its pacing issues and a barrage of bugs make it a hard sell.

Innovations in State of Decay 2 don´t solve any problems, but rather add some more. The game unnecessarily forces on its multiplayer and feels very impersonal. [Issue#287]
  66. Sep 4, 2018
State of Decay 2 is going to be very hit and miss for a number of people. If you can ignore the flaws, there is a fun game to be had when played with a friend. That said, even if you ignore its flaws, you can’t deny that this game was not ready for release.

Beyond the odd jolt of panic as your wrench breaks mid-fight, or when the piercing shriek of a spindly screamer attracts a ravening pack, there's little here to quicken the pulse. For a zombie game, that might be the most damning criticism of all. [Aug 2018, p.100]
  68. May 17, 2018
The State Of Decay concept still holds plenty of promise but this sequel is so broken that laughing at its bugs and glitches becomes its primary source of entertainment.
  69. May 17, 2018
State of Decay 2 feels more like a buggy expansion of the original game than a proper sequel.
  70. May 17, 2018
I was about to launch into another broken situation here, but I’m sure you get the point. The point is this: although there’s a very competent core loop and entertaining resource management sim somewhere within State of Decay 2, it’s really, really, broken. Unacceptably so. It frustrated me mightily to see a flash of a game I wanted to play, only to be immediately reminded that it’s not ready for release.

State of Decay 2 is a smart, messy idea without much of a game to go with it… again. Try it if you don’t mind bugs or repetition too much.
  2. May 17, 2018
There are times when State of Decay 2 is so buggy that it stops being a stodgy post-apocalyptic looting game and transforms into metatextual horror theatre. [Avoid]
  3. May 17, 2018
It’s not the story that shines in State of Decay 2, it’s the sandbox. It’s the small moments that emerge from the gameplay and the world itself that are the most compelling.
  4. Jun 15, 2018
Mostly, though, it just reminds me of a host of open-world games that are more beautiful, more storied, more fun.
  5. May 17, 2018
Managing your survivors and paying attention to their needs keeps being interesting, but actually fighting off the zombies gets dull. For all its issues, Metal Gear Survive—one of this year’s other big games about killing monsters and staying fed—excelled when it came to combat. State Of Decay 2 would be significantly more entertaining if it took a page out of that book and allowed you to do anything as satisfying as stabbing zombies with a spear through a chainlink fence.
  6. Jul 21, 2018
State of Decay 2 is fine only because State of Decay is fine. As a sequel, Undead Labs’ retread is a letdown.
  7. Jun 10, 2018
There’s no denying it, “State of Decay 2″ is among the most broken high-profile games released this console generation, a delicate juggling act that hits you in the face with pie again and again, much past the point of any comedy. Those who manage to trudge through the muck will find a remarkable, if ramshackle experience that ticks their every checkbox for a great zombie game, save the unwritten one marked “stability.”
  8. Jun 1, 2018
The real issue in State of Decay 2 is how little investment it manages to earn. In its function, it feels like a world founded on the idea that if you can just imbue it with enough randomness, enough player-independent activity and interaction, enough probabilistic cogs and gears to let random characters and random story beats to fit together, we can imbue that world with life as well. But rather than a world, we get an infinite nothing. And State of Decay 2 ends up feeling a lot like the zombies the populate it: All movement and raw appetite, with not even the faintest heartbeat to be heard.

The original State of Decay is a game that I placed a huge amount of enjoyable hours into and to say I was looking forward to State of Decay 2The original State of Decay is a game that I placed a huge amount of enjoyable hours into and to say I was looking forward to State of Decay 2 would be a massive understatement. Thankfully State of Decay 2 pretty much met my lofty expectations in all areas and despite it suffering with a few problems here and there it’s quite clear to see that this game has significant improvements over the original. The biggest and most enjoyable improvement for me was without a doubt the combat. The combat in the game is excellent and killing zombies never gets boring thanks to the varied and satisfying moves you can perform on the zombies. The gameplay on the whole feels improved as well and in my opinion it remains fun for longer. The main reason why it remains fun for longer is because it has more variety than in the previous game and this variety is definitely evident in both the missions you can undertake and the maps you undertake the missions on. If you like game’s that offer you lots of content then you will love State of Decay 2. I’m not exaggerating when I say that there’s almost an endless amount of replayability present in this game and the best thing is that this content can be enjoyed in both short bursts and long periods as well. When playing the game though you will however bump into a few bugs along the way, and whilst most of these bugs are small and not game-breaking they can still be frustrating and ruin the immersion levels somewhat at times. I was however able to look past these issues quite easily because you end up forgetting about them thanks to the different mechanics and elements the game has. Thankfully these different mechanics hold up really well most of the time and can be enjoyed in both single player and multiplayer. I must admit that I was really looking forward to the game’s multiplayer offering and thankfully when it works it’s really fun. The multiplayer option though does suffer with a few problems and they will have to make some tweaks to make it a better experience, but I appreciate the effort that has gone into the core idea though. Without a doubt one of my favourite things about the game was the presentation side of the things. Visually the game can look awesome at times and the accompanying sound design creates a very eerie atmosphere which in turn makes you become very immersed in the gameplay. At the end of the day if you were a fan of the first State of Decay then you will thoroughly enjoy State of Decay 2. It’s took what was good from the first game and improved it and even though it suffers with quite a few bugs these bugs still didn’t stop me from having a very enjoyable experience and these bugs also don’t stop me from giving the game a big thumbs up.
