Story, voice work, and animations are all still goofy, but throw in co-op multiplayer, better endgame content, and more reasons to replay it, and State of Decay 2 is the type of game with which certain players will fall in love. There's always something to do and in a classically sim style, it's hard to know when to stop. It's the most realistic zombie apocalypse simulation in the world and that's a beautiful thing.

State of Decay 2 greatly improves on the first game thanks to wider and more varied environments, great world simulation and character progression systems, better graphics and UI and finally a satisfying co-op mode. It won't satisfy lovers of strong, meaningful stories, but it's definitely one of the best and more enduring survival games around, and a game that lovers of the genre should absolutely have.

While it doesn’t have the irreverent humor of Dead Rising or the swiftness in movement like Dying Light, what State of Decay 2 offers is the pull that will have you saying, “Oooh, what’s in there?” every time you walk down a neighborhood cluttered with burnt-out cars and piles of dead bodies.

State of Decay 2 is just as good as the original but fails to make good on its major promises. There’s some great quality of life improvements here and there, but the repetitive goals to work towards and cursory co-op options stop it from being any better than the original. Despite all this, State of Decay 2’s gameplay loop is strangely alluring, but many won’t put up with its technical shortcomings.

There’s something about it that keeps you coming back, whether that’s the fun exploration or simply going on a quest to clear a few houses of infestations and then loot all the cupboards and drawers for goodies. But above all that it does nail the combat side, where headshots feel great as does getting up close with a machete. Gruesome and fun zombie-apocalypse survival, but also bug-ridden and poorly optimised.

It's quite simple. If you loved the first game, you'll appreciate the changes, like a more structured take on base building and community management. There are fantastic systems, hampered by repetitive and shallow gameplay that ultimately feels pointless. State of Decay 2's scale and lower price don't quite make up for its lack of polish.

I was about to launch into another broken situation here, but I’m sure you get the point. The point is this: although there’s a very competent core loop and entertaining resource management sim somewhere within State of Decay 2, it’s really, really, broken. Unacceptably so. It frustrated me mightily to see a flash of a game I wanted to play, only to be immediately reminded that it’s not ready for release.

Kinda sad really.

Nevertheless, this game is a masterpiece in zombie standards. It has topped Dying Light as my favourite zombie game and is exactly what i have wanted out of a zombie survival base building fantasy. And that is how you should treat this game: it is a 9/10 zombie experience not a revolutionary gaming masterpiece. This genre has been beaten to death and this game still manages to catch a breath of fresh air.
Unfortunately in its current state it is apparently buggy and i say "apparently" because personally i have not encountered a single bug in my 14-15 hours of playing. Maybe im lucky, maybe not. I must also point out that i have only played single player because this is primarily a single player game even with all the advertising of 4 player co op.
If you are a fan of the first game, you will absolutely love this game: every mechanic has improved. From base building to combat to character progression. The game is also much harder now: with the danger of the blood plague or being ambushed by human survivors.
For new players, if you are a fan of the walking dead or any fantasy of surviving in an apocalyptic world you will also love this game. Building your base up from scavenged resources is incredibly satisfying and rewarding. This feels like what the walking dead games should have been.

However if you are looking for a good story, do not look at this game. Cheesy dialogue and voice acting makes it hard to take any sort of story seriously though it does add some fun if you laugh at how bad it is. The stories themselves are also nagging and boring. A lot of the world building revolves around doing individual character missions such as finding personal items. However as soon as you play as that character it forces you to do the mundane mission.
Another negative is the other enclaves or communities in the game and they will non stop ask for your resources or get p****d at you and passive aggressively tell you they are moving town as they do not feel welcome. Ugh.
Aside from that, the game is great and i wholly recommend if you are a fan of the zombie survival/base building/apocalypse genre.

Just like Sea of Thieves, I wanted to like this game. But after playing coop with my friend for the first two hours I was literally falling asleep with my controller on my hands. Xbox has completely destroyed all good faith I had in them, and let me just say Xbox is my console of choice. I've logged literally hundreds of hour son this console cause its where my friends play, but WTF. It's not fanboyism if it's damn accurate, and Sonys been making Xbox look like child's play. I've played Horizon, GoW, and Persona 5 on my PS4 this year and all were masterpieces. This game is just boring and uninspired. The light multi-player elements fall flat on their face. 7 days to die feels more exciting to play than this game in every way but graphics. The funny thing is the best game on the Xbox one this year is IMO Deep Rock Galactic, and that game seems to have flown under the radar. Save your money, and support a developer who does more than port their old game to a new engine and add multiplayer. Check out Deep Rock if your hungry for a good Xbox game like I was. Expand
