If you loved Sonic Mania, Plus is an essential purchase. It’s more Sonic Mania, but different.

Taken as a full package this is arguably the best Sonic game there is. Mania mode is fun as ever, the cast is fuller, and the bonus challenges, unlockables, Encore mode and multiplayer makes for a game that earns its spot on the retail shelf. Some existing owners might wonder whether two extra characters, remixed singleplayer and revamped splitscreen is worth the upgrade given there's no substantially new levels to speak of, but I think it's a fine way to extend the experience.

Sonic Mania Plus is a return to form for Sega’s most iconic character. It takes all that is old and makes it new again.

Sonic Mania was a true return to form for the mascot, in his 2D 'Classic' guise at least, and celebrated the glory days of the original games while also enhancing their qualities and taking on new ideas. From new areas, imaginative second acts and some delightful boss encounters, the development team poured a lot of passion and talent into the project. Sonic Mania Plus takes that solid foundation and - in all honestly - doesn't do a great deal to mess with it. The new characters and modes are welcome, and there are some neat tweaks which iron out some of the kinks present in the original release, but on the whole this is an enhanced edition of the game rather than a feature-rich update. If you've still not sampled the delights of Sonic Mania then this is clearly the version to get, but if you're an existing owner then the low asking price of the DLC update make this well worth a look; we'll take any excuse to dive back into one of the best 2D platformers of recent memory.

It adds on neatly onto your original game (no need to start all over), and will extend your playtime at least another few hours if not more. Also, if you missed Sonic Mania last year, this is now the definitive version of the game. That said, if you just casually picked it up, and only invested a few hours, there isn’t that much here in Sonic Mania Plus to justify spending more money unless you’re a huge fan of Mighty and Ray.

The quality of the package in Mania Plus is so good that it is becoming one of the best, if not the best, Sonic game of all time.

Mania Plus is a fantastical update to an already great game. tl;dr Great update to an already great game.

Plus adds Encore Mode, Mighty and Ray and several tweaks (the Menu update and missing level transitions, which are already available free if you don't have plus) and more. Plus is $5 if you have the base game, which is a great price, and $30 to buy the entire physical package (comes with art-book, reversible cover, shiny reflective box cover) where the orignal base Digital copy was $20.

So encore mode: 7 new special stages which are difficult. They are not nearly as easy as Mania Modes. Remixed stages with new color palettes. The new palettes really pour new life into the stages, and tweaked areas in zones make stages feel new enough without feeling completely foreign. New life system. You don't have lives per say but a shared life system where every time you die, the character you were currently using is lost and you immediately continue with the characters you have remaining. (think of shared stock in Subspace Emissary in SSB Brawl). You can recover characters in certain item boxes and in the new Bonus Stages, a pinball minigame like the bonus tables in Sonic Spinball crossed with the character select in Knuckles' Chaotix.

So Mighty and Ray: Mighty is like an easy mode where Spikes don't initially hurt him, and he has a ground pound, which allows him to reach new areas below ground. Ray is like the cape in Super Mario World, and gliding is fun to control when you get the hang of it allowing for ridiculous speedruns of acts. There are new cheat codes that allow creative manipulations of gameplay and so much more. And that's not mentioning the godly music by Tee Lopes and the already great level design by Stealth, Taxman and the team already found in Mania. There's still more surprises in store, but they're more fun t be discovered in person than told about in text.

Mania Plus truly is a golden return to form for Classic Sonic and something that can't not be skipped, for a Modern/Classic/Adventure Sonic fan or a fan of momentum platforming in general.

With a $5 extra price tag (or $5 DLC depending on your preference) it really is the definitive edition of Mania! They even took the time to add tiny things like bug fixes, stage transitions for every zone and even a new bonus stage! The Sega Genesis reversible cover is another amazing touch. Just a little tip, if you want to get Super Sonic, Tail, Knuckles, Ray or Mighty in Encore mode, then you have to be the master of Mania special stages so definitely practice! So if you like Sonic even remotely then buy this game! Thank you! Expand

And even then, those new characters are still way too similar to Sonic. They honestly might as well make Sonic the only playable character. Doesn't help that they won't do anything new with Classic Sonic so this thing comes off as nothing more thab another Classic Sonic game. Remember when I said they might as well make Sonic the only playable character? Well they also might as well make the same game over and over again if they're going to be so similar to the point where finding gameplay differences is near impossible. Expand
