The challenge is real without seeming too difficult, never making me feel helpless. The world of Runner3 is beautiful to behold as it bursts forth with color and life. Even though the core game can get monotonous at times, Runner3 is yet another terrific indie game that deserves everyone’s attention.

Although it is not adequately reinforced by a stylish design, Runner 3 is an experience that every fan of the arcade spirit must treasure.

One heck of an entertaining experience for those willing to jump into it. [Issue #34 – July/August 2018, p. 71]

The greatest compliment to be paid to a game like Runner 3 is that after feeling the urge to toss a controller, it's hard to think of anything else except trying again. Runner 3’s greatest strength is in rewarding that perseverance.

Runner3 is a thoroughly enjoyable return to form for Commander Video and friends, both as an advancement of the long-running indie series and its debut on Switch. Some minor, frustrating setbacks hold it back from greatness, but the rhythmic platforming the series is known for is present and as dynamic as ever.

Runner3 is a fun – if flawed – continuation of the Bit.Trip Runner series. While its stages are beautiful and the whimsical nature of it all is charming, the heavy difficulty spikes make you really work for any sense of enjoyment.

I wanted to love Runner3, but it’s too frustrating of an experience to ascend to any higher commendation. I’m confused as to how the response to the eminently accessible Runner2 was to make its sequel bitterly hard with no recourse. My enjoyment was consistently interrupted by too much frustrating repetition, an aspect that soiled my affection for the overall style and excellent character selection (Dave, Shovel Knight, Charles Martinet, and Eddie Riggs!).

However, dive a little deeper you will find an amazingly fun experience. One that will have you cursing one minute and jumping up to do a little jig. Fetch quests to unlock extra characters. This game oozes charm. It is not for the faint of heart though. It is a true challenge, like the old games I grew up on. Give it a play you will not be disappointed. Top notch sound, audio and graphics. Loves it. Expand

It's one of those games that's easy pick up and tough to master. I say this as I'm currently trying to improve my score on the leader boards, as well as complete every level.

The game overall is fun, vibrant, challenging, rewarding and sounds excellent. You can even unlock Charles Martinet!

I'd definitely recommend picking this one up. It's available for digital download as well as physical release.

Runner 3 is great, just a little worse.

The core design and gameplay of the Runner series is something I really love. The personality given to the nonsense world of Kricfalusian garbage creatures is infectiously charming and occasionally just plain funny. The tone they set up with the opening narration is perfect for a game where you know the story doesn't matter, and the artists just wanted to have fun. The music is of course beautiful and the way it matches perfectly with your movements is gratifying even to the very end.

The gameplay is tight, responsive and satisfying. It isn't an endless runner, instead using intricately designed levels with clear checkpoints to offer a very specific challenge. There are only a handful of abilities at your disposal so even if you get caught off guard, you'll know what you need to do to get past that obstacle next time. The game is tough, but it's fair once you familiarize yourself with the controls.

I wouldn't give the game a 10 out of 10 just because its predecessor Runner 2 was overall better. Runner 3 has a few issues that I can only really identify because the bar has been set by its older brother. There are only 3 worlds in this game. Granted there is a 'retro' game with levels inside each of those worlds alongside the main levels, but its just a downgrade in content from the previous entry. Also, while the retro game feels fine to play, that's not the reason you buy the game. It just feels like something they made (with care) after the fact because they knew the game was a little lacking in content.

Also, the inclusion of the double jump works because the game is built around it, but I don't think it was necessarily a good inclusion, the controls feel a little messier because of it.

Challenge stages return but the balance is so off-kilter. Whereas before challenge stages were exceptionally hard and could take an hour to get through, this game's challenges just feel mean. Expecting pixel perfection on every move just makes me not want to bother with them.

Overall the game is great, but as a fan of Runner 2, it's just a little worse. I trust the team behind the game to continue making great stuff.
