Amazing ports of one of the most underrated titles of the Wii U.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker may ultimately be another Nintendo port, but it’s an extremely entertaining, polished Nintendo port that offers millions more players the opportunity to experience a game that languished on the undersold Wii U. That’s clearly a win for Nintendo, but also a win for puzzle-loving gamers, too.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is an absolute joy to behold, from its cute visual styling and delicious soundtrack and audio utterances from the main characters, to the expertly crafted self-contained stages, jam-packed with smart puzzles to solve and a plethora of goodies to uncover. This was one of those Wii U gems that thoroughly deserved another shot at the limelight, and with its excellent new additions now, it is indeed time to shine bright.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is one of the best options in Switch’s catalogue. The combination of a huge amount of funny puzzles along with multiple additions to this version make it feel like an interesting purchase.

Captain Toad is one the top recommended puzzle games for the Nintendo Switch. This port heads back to all the good things that the original game brought to Wii U but now with several interesting changes that make it a highly recommended title.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is charming, fun, and — in a rarity for Nintendo’s Wii U ports — right-priced for the Switch.

This puzzle game is a very good addition to your game collection. It gives the little gamers a joyful adventure, while experienced gamers will have a bit of a challenge to get to 100%. Simply a must buy.

Treasure Tracker still feels close to unique, and gains new life on both of Nintendo’s current systems. Switch is very much the better choice, but 3DS is by no means a bad option. Still smart, prettier than ever and, in retrospect, genuinely important as part of Nintendo’s modern history, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a rare example of a game that actually feels better for being a few years old.

An enjoyable treasure. Captain Toad visits Nintendo Switch adding a new cooperative mode and some new levels. It is not so much, but it may be very interesting for newcomers.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a smart, fascinating puzzle game. A must have for Switch and 3DS owners.

The best part is that this is a great game to play on the go, the levels are short enough to crack out a couple on a short commute or loads on a long one, and they’re packed with extra challenges that take little time to accomplish as well. Yes there are some problems with the transition from machine to machine(s), but this is still a very welcome return of this brand of puzzle-action.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker remains the fun game it was before, though there is no need to play it twice. Most of the original content is present in this release with the Odyssey content being the exception. The sheer variety of puzzles and fun gameplay mechanics deserve to be experienced at the very least. It doesn't really matter if you do that on Nintendo 3DS or Switch as both run quite excellent.

Aesthetically delightful, original in its ideas and extremely refined in its execution, the first great adventure of the fearless mushroom vigorously claims the uniqueness of the Nintendo philosophy.

This is the same game we enjoyed four years ago on Wii U. A perfect mix between puzzles and platforms, which includes four new Super Mario Odyssey inspired levels and a new (pretty basic) coop mode.

A fantastic game and a must-play for anyone that enjoys puzzle-platformers. The game is by no means hard, and you’ll likely finish it over the course of a weekend – but for those that are set on completing every objective and finding every Pixel Toad – you’ll be sure to squeeze many more hours out.

Captain Toad still is a great game, and it’s original concept works great on 3DS and Switch. The new levels are not enough to buy the game again, but if you haven’t played it yet or you want to enjoy it on another platform it’s a great choice.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was a fun time when it hit the Wii U, and it’s still a fun time today. The new levels are easily some of the best in the game, but they don’t really justify a second purchase. I’m thrilled Nintendo wants to make use of this well-traveled fungi, but I hope the next time I see Captain Toad, he’s going on a completely new adventure.

Despite a smattering of minor complaints, Captain Toad stands as a pint-sized version of Nintendo's stellar first party pedigree. It's among the best Mario spin-offs around and a delightful iteration on old ideas.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker remains an excellent game that feels perfectly at home on the Switch. The short-burst gameplay of the diorama-puzzle levels suits the portable nature of the system to a tee. It still looks, sounds and plays as well as it did on the Wii-U, so if it didn’t hold your attention then, the lackluster additional features aren’t likely to change your feelings now. If you’re a Switch owner looking for a joyous, simple, unique puzzle game, then Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is worth some permanent space on your memory card.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a brilliant puzzle-platformer game, which will constantly impress you with creative stages and a top-notch presentation. Despite providing different experiences if played on handheld or console modes, it delivers a charming adventure, with tons of content to keep you hooked for hours.

Just like Captain Toad, if you can't jump, you'd better use your brain. This down-to-earth approach transforms the environments into puzzles that require to look harder - and dig deeper - than expected in order to find all of their design treasures. And despite a lack of additional content, such wonders get even shinier on Switch.

Another great Wii U game that is made better by the Nintendo Switch's portability. It's a fun experience that doesn't overstay its welcome, but definitely does feel repetitive in certain areas.

A clever puzzle game that’s finally found a more suitable home on Switch, as it always felt like a handheld game that played best on the Wii U Gamepad. It’s a collection of bite-sized levels that compel you to tick all of the boxes, and an ideal game to play in short bursts. While the Switch port doesn’t improve much aside from the change in platform, and is too expensive to warrant a repeat purchase, it’s certainly worthy of a re-release for those who missed it last-generation.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a hidden gem from the Wii U era that's been given a new lease of life on the Nintendo Switch, and rightly so. New levels and fresh multiplayer are welcome inclusions but it's a bit of a shame that we've lost four levels as a result – and for no apparent reason. Still, all being said, this is a wonderful and gorgeous puzzler fit for all ages, and one which you should definitely experience if you're yet to.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a wonderfully-executed port of an unexpected spin-off starring Toad. Thanks to its marvelous level design, camera orientation and delightful audiovisual presentation, Captain Toad is certain to bring some very welcome charm and fun to the growing catalogue of the Nintendo Switch.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker offers very little for those who have played it before, but if you haven’t played before then you’re in for a treat. Treasure Tracker might look adorable on the surface but under lurks a fun and innovative puzzler, one that might just be better played on your own adventure away from the TV.

We’ve been handed a mildly updated version of a little puzzle-platformer in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. And despite its bubbly and cutesy presentation, the tail end of the game is a challenging and thoughtful experience where lateral thinking and classic Nintendo game-design coalesce to really offer up a rewarding experience.

One of the most delightfully charming puzzle games of in recent memory and the dollhouse-style puzzle boxes are wonderful to explore and it's cute and adorable all the way through. Sadly, Wii U owners will find few reasons to pick up this edition of the game, but anyone who hasn't already played Captain Toad will find a puzzle game they'll finish and just want more of.

Still a fun time albeit one that could do with a healthier dose of fresh content in this Switch version. Walking the line between platformer and puzzler, the game’s light sprinkling of elements from both help create an experience that’s fun for all ages.

There is a charmingly competent puzzler here, yet it’s hard to recommend without an abundance of caveats. If you’ve yet to play the Captain Toad and solving cute and charming puzzles, it could be worth a shot if it drops in price, even though the asking price is lower than most to begin with. If possible, and if you own a Wii U, you would be better off dusting that system down and playing it on there.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Switch is measurably better in all ways than the original game — according to the technical analysts at Digital Foundry, the 3DS version is great too — but more importantly represents a chance for many Nintendo fans who skipped the Wii U to finally see what all the fuss is about.
  2. Jul 14, 2018
Underneath its painfully charming exterior lies an engrossing puzzler, one that rewards careful observation above all else. It was a great game when it debuted four years ago, and it’s even better now that it’s portable.
  3. Jul 11, 2018
Nintendo’s continued run of Wii U ports has to have a finite end, but while Switch players are getting games like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker then its best just to bask in it. Gloriously cheerful, charming and enthralling, it’s only diminishing features are its slightly short length and lack of difficulty for seasoned players.
  4. Jul 11, 2018
No, this Switch version is clearly aimed at those who missed out on Captain Toad the first time around. If that’s you, then there’s no better time to fill your boots: even four years later it remains an absolutely charming adventure and one that’s still a treat to play.
  5. Jul 11, 2018
If you missed out on Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker the first time it was around, then there's no better time to dive in. If you've played it before though, the new offerings of Super Mario Odyssey-themed levels won't be that enticing, unless you have a kid to bring into the fun for co-op.
  6. Jul 11, 2018
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is an incredibly bare-bones port, but that doesn’t really matter in the end. We all know it was originally released on a naff platform next to nobody owned, and a game this fun and charming deserves a second chance. The Switch and 3DS versions are fine ports, and suitable for just that.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was originally designed for Wii U, and it shows in this port.

For those unfamiliar, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a puzzle game where you have to guide the title character or Toadette through a cubic level to the Power Star. The thing is, they can't jump, so you'll need to find other ways to get there, such as climbing ladders or standing on rising platforms. A big challenge comes in collecting the three Super Gems in each level. Sometimes they are hidden behind head-scratching puzzles.

The puzzle gameplay is as great as it was on Wii U...except for the controls. Whereas the Wii U version has you touching the GamePad screen to move platforms, here you either have to touch the console screen in handheld mode or, on TV, move a cursor (with the controller) to the platform and press a button. These controls felt awkward to me, and although I got used to them somewhat as I played, it's not as good as the Wii U version.

Regarding differences between this and the Wii U version, there's not much. Basically, the Super Mario 3D World levels are replaced by equally entertaining Super Mario Odyssey levels.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a fun game that has gained a few issues in the conversion from Wii U to Switch. You could go far worse than this port, but I recommend the Wii U version over it due to better controls.

What i dont get is why people think this would be different game, just because its on Switch now...and downrate it on that.
