Virtually everything about NHL 19 is a genuine step forward in quality. While some modes received the lion’s share of the attention, it feels like damn near everything received SOME love. If you have been on the fence, now is the time to lace up and hit the ice. We’ll see you between the pipes.

NHL 19 continues to refine its beloved sports title to a sheen. Game play feels fluid and responsive with next to nothing getting in its own way. NHL 19 sets a standard that most sports titles could learn from: fundamentals before flair.

By revamping its multiplayer efforts and focusing it in a hub that promotes creative expression (both cosmetically and through gameplay preferences), NHL 19 marks the best representation of simulation hockey video games this generation.

In sum, another year and another solid NHL release; it might not have enough to stir series veterans, although the inclusion of the World of CHEL and the Legends is certainly cool. Furthermore, the investment EA Canada has made to those who have long sat out on the series or always wanted to give it a shot is quite strong, so if you’re in that boat, NHL 19 may be what you’ve been waiting for.

There are still things that need addressing, but NHL 19 is the best hockey experience I’ve had with the NHL franchise in the PS4 era.

NHL 19 takes some interesting risks with World of Chel while bringing badly-needed improvements to the gameplay. Its modes are customarily solid, but the faster, tighter action on the ice is what makes it possible to recommend NHL 19 to newcomers and lapsed hockey fans alike.

    Love it!
The updated skating system in this year's edition is the most noticeable new feature, and it brings a massive upgrade to gameplay.
One of the coolest additions to this year's game is "World of Chel." Although I still cringe at the name, the new hub brings a bit of freshness to game modes in NHL 19. To enter World of Chel, you create a playable character that can be dropped into a variety of game modes, the popular EASHL online team play mode, the arcade-style NHL Threes mode that was introduced last year, and an awesome new mode called NHL Ones.Playing Ones ( 1v1v1 free-for-all where you race to outscore your other two opponents on the ice ) may bring experienced NHL gamers back to the days of NHL 2006 and the very similar "Free For All" game mode. Either way, it's very welcome addition to NHL's collection of game modes, as it's an addictive and fun way to hone your one-on-one game.Along with World of Chel comes pond hockey venues and a massive upgrade in the player customization department. Users can outfit their playable characters in a wide variety of clothing and equipment, ranging from wacky jackets, sweatshirts and pants to NHL team-branded merchandise and jerseys. You'll rarely see two online characters take to the ice in the same loadout.

The customization and breadth of drop-in options brings a bit more depth to the gameplay options and that's a good thing.

For offline players, Franchise Mode appears to be largely similar to the product rolled out last year, but with one exception.
EA Sports has overhauled the mode's scouting system from top-to-bottom. When you take over a franchise, you're tasked with assembling a team of 20 scouts that will evaluate both pro and amateur talent, meaning the quality of your scouting will likely affect the quality of drafting, trading, and free agency decisions. I didn't get too much of a chance to play around with it (at least not over a long period of time ), but it's something that may be valued by those who invest enough time into franchise mode to play across multiple seasons.

Movement of skaters has improved so turning is quicker and smoother than ever before. There were a lot of penalties called, but majority were justified since I was rattling the poke check at inappropriate times causing tripping of opponents. The old time controls is awesome and one timers are much easier to execute this year. The new modes are awesome too. Highly recommend to any sports gamer. Expand

The gameplay is greatly improved, much better than NHL 18, dekes and dangles are much more realistic and also the World Of Chel mode offers a lot of new cusmotizable gear for your pro.
They also introduced Ones where you can play 1v1v1 games, and a new Pro-Am future.
The Auto-Player switching needs more attention but still is way better than the last year. Had a great time playing it and i can say that after some time this game becomes really competitive.
They literally introduced a LOT of new content, so the game feels like it was redesigned completely.
I strongly recommend it to NHL fans or any sports gamer.

TheTo all those people saying this is the same ol crap year after year, just stop, you're wrong. Much smoother skating than previous NHL's. The customization of skater loadouts are much better now as you can adjust the height and weight of your player, and the new attribute system is a cool new addition. I really could care less about the 'casual' aspect of clothing customizing, but thats all there too. One's mode is great because its a quick load, and you don't have to deal with lobby idiots who just sit in the middle for 2 minutes straight. If you want a real a sim, try out EASHL 6's or 3's, but beware of the R1 button, don't use it. X is the new R1. Three's is great if you want a no-holds-barred experience, which I personally enjoy. I don't go to in depth with HUT or Franchise, I just like quick fast paced online games, this game has both. Of course you're bound to run in to dummies if you try EASHL drop-ins, but luckily there is enough modes to combat the stupidity and keep you happy. Expand

The development team at EAintroduced a brand new Real Player Motion so the gameplay feels alot cleaner than previous years iterations, crossovers, stopping and they added an insanely robust scouting system in franchise mode, and added over 200 NHL Legends and a bunch of other details and improvements to the game. Obviously, the reason why (and it is clear as day) as to why so many people say the game is the same as last year is because it looks the same. The presentation (and a reviewer who had played a previous iteration of NHL games since NHL 14 or 15 would know this lol) is pretty much the exact same. The same NBC style layout, the same announcers (albeit they don't seem as annoying this year, definitely not as much repetition) and even though there have been minor upgrades to the crowd and how they react it's fairly similar to years past. Would be nice to see some major improvements when it comes to presentation. The two main announcers for the game are already not scheduled to be in the NHL2020 (you can research for yourself it was announced earlier in the year) so now seems the perfect time for EA to step it up. Bring in some Canadian announcers. Give us some intermission shows or clips whether it's pre-game, post game or like I said during intermission. Also, during whistle stoppage bring in some more commentary about players or teams on a more personal level. I haven't played the Be a Pro mode yet but they definitely need to add more depth to it. Maybe make it like NBA 2K19 MyCareer (Not Madden Long shot lol). Where you can customize your player, have an actual storyline. Have us interact with known hockey reporters after a game etc. Cutscenes at the draft and when we get selected. Being drafted is the biggest day for young hockey players so they need to make us the players feel like it is. They could even go as far as implementing this new world of CHEL into the Be a Pro mode. If they created a HUB world with outdoor rinks and you can bring your player on the ponds and play against other players online. The stage is yours EA. 2019 is good but not great with alot of under the hood improvements. I'll hope 2020 is the year the real magic falls on the ice. Score: 8.0/10

I had pretty damn good reason to believe such, given how bad the previous games were according to my of my friends. However, This game surprised me. This game is fun, something I couldn't really say about other NHL games and other EA games from this year (COUGHCOUGHMADDEN.) In particular, Be a Pro and Franchise modes have both blossomed into pretty good modes so far. I HATED the interviews in Be a Pro, so I'm obviously glad to see that they're gone. As for Franchise mode, my god, it's almost like they fixed every issues I've had with it. It was rare to see teams get studs in the later rounds. Well now you will sometimes see players with medium franchise potential slip to the fourth or fifth rounds of the draft. The sim is so much faster than in previous games. I can sim an entire season in almost five minutes. Players take their time to progress, but that's to be expected from an NHL sim because NHL players take years to develop.

I do have one major issue with this game, and that's penalties. There are so many stick infractions that it's almost not even worth it to try and poke-check. Even if your players stick is nowhere near the skates of an opposing player, he will trip, and you will get called for tripping. It's freaking stupid, and EA needs to change it.

Welcome to NHL 16.4 edition. This years new update features CONSTANT PENALTY"S , awful EASHL waiting times and very bad AUTO-PLAYER SWITCHINGWelcome to NHL 16.4 edition. This years new update features CONSTANT PENALTY"S , awful EASHL waiting times and very bad AUTO-PLAYER SWITCHING (always at the wrong times and always to the wrong players) so enjoy. It just gets worse with this new console and Sean Rammer's team at the helm! It won't be better until they hire a new development team! EA can add all the new features it wants to this game however IF THE GAMEPLAY SUCKS THE GAME WILL SUCK! I've recently played my old xbox 360 console EA NHL games and NHL 2K games and i just realized this game is exactly the same as NHL 2K10. Don't believe me, then go play it for yourself's.

I just bought this game a few hours ago and within the 1st minute of playing an online vs mode game i was ready to snap this game in half! It was VERY slow, HORRIBLE AI (computer teamates as normal for EA product), choppy with horrible puck physics (again since NHL 16), annoying slow to get up collisions, puck control is utter trash again in eashl (Not sure why EA feels the need to change the gameplay settings with each gameplay mode) , bad pass'es and passing, stupid annoying constant penalty's (turn them down) and the worse part of the game was the players AUTO SWITCHING! I've searched over and over through the settings to shut it off however there is NO setting! So every time I had the opponent lined up for big hits, it would switch my user to a user outta play and skate him in the wrong direction leaving the guy just to walk in every time! brutal EA! Also with the AUTO SWITCHING, EA clearly gives you the wrong players everytime! Why bother playing when EA also determans winners from the get go? Momentum once again ruins this game as one team will do anything it wants while your team becomes a bag of pucks! The constant short side shot goals from top of slot or cross crease goals CANT be stopped. The puck will flow through your USER everytime anyways. GARBAGE GAMEPLAY.

I'd suggest EA don't ever give coaching feed backs when you guys don't know the game of hockey! Teaching kids and whatnot how NOT to play! learn the formations of the faceoff's!, powerplays, short handed! learn that players cover each other when up in the play, or players cross over on power plays to get off better shots!

Now that EA feels the need to constanty hand out penaltys for poke checking every other push of the button. That just leaves one other option to playin defensive hockey and thats called hitting! However the hitting in this game is useless, you are more likely to miss the hit and leaving user way outta position and the play. In real hockey a normal player would simply play the body but nooo EA would never think of this. By the way the poke check button was the only feature i thought EA had right in NHL 18 however everybody cried it was over powered. (Poke checking in real ice hockey is the most important forecheck!) The garbage puck control in NHL 18 made the poke check button too strong for sure since you could lose pucks from 35 miles away from the skater behind you that had a 40,000ft reach with the worlds fastest hand eye cordinations everytime.

Skating is very slow and still garbage! players always receiving pucks on their back hands and the passing! Where the hell at any level of hockey do you see passing this bad? This is just sad! Where is the hitting anyways? (its a video game and it should be fun however the users skate right pass them) Why cant we slow down when skating and trail plays? why cant we do quick stop and go's? These players all skate like zombies...

Once again in the offline modes you are playing against EA's perfect lil robots which wont flinch or fail for any type of fake or deke! these lil robots will always know which directions you are gonna turn , pass or shoot everytime. Computer will score everytime whenever and anytime on it wants. outshoot the computer 35-5 and lose 4-1... incredible.

Be prepared to wait over 5 minutes or up to even a whole day in EA lobby to play a game in EASHL. The average wait time for a EASHL game is already over 5-8 minutes alone just waiting for EA to search. They had EASHL LOBBY right in NHL 16 when you could just pick any position until teams where full rather then just waiting for a certain position. Today i tried all day to play just 1 EASHL game! ended up being a 4 on 3 game.

This game does keep adding features however everything they add is a feature that was in previous games! What is so damm hard about fixing the NHL gameplay? its almost 2019 and these games are going back words since Sean Rammer has taken over! Now all you guys care about is the coin in HUT. Instead of releasing broken games every year why don't you just give us updates to the same game and then release a new product every 5 years when somthing MAJOR is different for a change. This game will never be fixed until EA fan boys stop kissing EA's ass. By the way I shouldn't have to play with 50 sliders to make this game enjoyable.
