Everything is absolutely fantastic, and while in-game performance isn't perfect, it's hardly enough of a downside to affect my view of the game overall. Avalanche has truly brought the thunder.

If you love open world games that let you loose to just play with things and see what kind of mayhem you can create, there's no better series than Just Cause 4. And while this holiday season is filled to the brim with new games, I would strongly advise against sleeping on Rico's latest adventure. It's one you'll be guaranteed to have dozens of hours of fun with.

Just Cause 4 is the perfect example of what Just Cause is. The action is over-the-top and amazing, but the story is really thin and missions get repetitive. If you love the explosive gameplay however, you are set for a perfect vacation.

Just Cause 4 will not change the fact that I'm a fan of Rico and his sturdy approach.

Just Cause 4 is the best entry in the series to date, offering spectacular free-wheeling destruction on a scale that’s not been attempted before. Rico remains one of gaming’s most enjoyable protagonists, but more than ever before, it’s really all about what he’s capable of doing rather than the events unfolding around him.

Just Cause 4 is a very entertaining package and its potential won’t be fully tapped for a long time.

With its extreme weather scenarios and the familiar, over-the-top usage of Rico’s grapple gun, wingsuit and parachute, Just Cause 4 is the most ridiculous and best it has ever been.

Just Cause 4 is a slightly better version of Just Cause 3's destruction-fueled action, but lacks a big new idea to give it an identity of its own.

In Just Cause 4 you will have fun making things explode and exploring the map in the most different ways, but don’t expect a great depth of play.

Just Cause 4 is a great sandbox with a funny action moments, but you'll find repetitive missions and great ideas unexplored.

Just Cause 4 is a really engrossing game that makes you want to goof around. The amount of new toys will decide about the longevity of this game - players can unlock A LOT of them during their progress with the main storyline. Unfortunately, it also means that gamers have to complete a dozen of repetitive tasks. Despite that, it's still worth it.

The Avalanche Studios title retains all the strengths of the franchise, and some of its weaknesses, but enhances its sandbox formula.

Just Cause 4 tries to bring the series to a new level, but in the end the game delivers the same funny sandbox experience it's very well known for, with only little differences.

The latest adventure of Rico Rodriguez, with its good dose of adrenaline and over-the-top action, forces our hero to embark on a real impossible mission to dismantle the dangerous Project Illapa. Despite the lack of variety and the exaggerated length of the campaign, Just Cause 4 still manages to push the boundaries of players’ imaginations, dragging them once again into a world of destruction, explosions and pure chaos.

Still delivers the series' sandbox mayhem, but is underserved by some pretty dated systems.

Just Cause 4 is the perfect example of a game built around a concept or engine, which makes for a fun experience, without offering any depth or expectations.

While Just Cause 4 still offers a very good sandbox, and instant fun with non-stop action, the game suffers from poor visuals, awful cinematics and one of the dullest narrative we've ever seen.

For fans of the series, Just Cause 4 ends up being one of those virtually critic-proof titles. The story is forgettable, and the repetitive mission types can feel like a chore. With that said, the chaos that all of your tools can cause creates a type of destructive madness that few other games can replicate, and the fun springing from that anarchy is undeniable. It isn't a masterpiece by any means, and it could certainly stand to be improved in the area of graphical presentation, but the moment you get your hands on the game, you might not care so long as there's something you can blow up.

Just Cause 4 is a wild and outrageous open-world game, and there are a lot of goofy and funny moments that are worth cherishing. But compared with its prequel, Just Cause 4 has barely changed in terms of gameplay.

The opportunities to give free rein to their destructive inspiration are always abundant and well supported, but the saga has undeniably reached a point of stagnation.

Avalanche wraps an even more explosive Just Cause title, with extreme weather conditions that produce stunning effects on the island of Solís. Just Cause 4, however, can’t manage to overcome the critical aspects of the past chapters, mostly for the uncompelling plot.

It’s very much a make-your-own-fun kind of game. If you go the staid route of dishing out gun-ishment, it’s a lovely looking but rather empty third-person shooter. If you go the batshit insane route of tying everything to everything and adding rocket boosters, it’s a ballet of hilarious carnage that will likely result in your accidental death dozens of times. It’s just a dance that’s only changed a few steps from the last time.

Just Cause 4 refines everything that made its predecessor great. It’s still one of the most generous and bombastic open world games, but its new systems don’t progress the sandbox as much as they should.

Just Cause 4 is an easy-to-play sandbox of chaos with a sprinkling of extreme weather. It holds strong due to an improved grapple and varied tools, and while this explosive sequel won’t set the world on fire, you can blow up enough things to make it interesting.

Just Cause 4 succeeds in being a chaotic open world in which ammunition tricks and vehicles are always on.

If you honestly loved Just Cause 3 and want to carry on the war that game started, along with balloons to send cows into the stratosphere, you’ll mostly be happy with the sequel. For the rest of us, it’s never as good or insane as it needs to be, and every part of the excitement is tinged with frustration.

At a time when open-world games sometimes overstay their welcome, Just Cause 4 is at the other end of the spectrum, where you wish there was more to experience because it has so much going for it.

Just Cause 4 is an entertaining game to play if you want to just sit back and blow a bunch of things up. The new customisation options are great, and there are some interesting ideas with extreme weather, but ultimately a lot of the missions aren’t particularly exciting or ask for you to vary up how you approach them.
  29. Just Cause is always known for its action aspect. And the fact is not changed with Just Cause 4. But with almost last gen visual and countless of bugs and issues, it feels like a rushed game.

Just Cause is a mess. It stutters, it crashed, the AI is broken and the new system of frontlines is taking away important things we love about Just Cause. They shouldn't have gone with missions, but instead with more freedom.

Just Cause 4 has more of the same destruction and mayhem the series is known for, but the game has a litany of technical issues and empty mechanics that make it impossible to recommend.

The plot pulls off a potentially murky blend of regime change and climate-conspiracy because it's obvious that nobody expects anybody to think too seriously about these things, and the game beneath the plot throws the same objectives at you over and over again because it knows that the tools you're given are fun enough to ensure that you can do things a little differently each time. Try as it might, Just Cause 4 does not live up to its predecessors. In a game that's built around normally fun elements like chaos, destruction, and revolution, Just Cause 4 ends up getting in its own way far too often with extraneous menu-based systems, a wild camera and controls, and (on PC) a litany of performance issues and inexplicable game crashes. It's a disappointment, to be frank, and made me want to give up and play Just Cause 2 instead.
  3. Dec 3, 2018
Between the technical issues, the drab story, and the baffling mission structure though I’m feeling pretty disappointed so far. I didn’t necessarily want Just Cause 4 to be more of the same, but I don’t think this new direction works very well either—not to mention it feels like the game needed another few months of development. We’ll keep you updated if anything significant changes between now and release, but at the moment this one’s hard to recommend. [Impressions]

The campaign never manages to escape its own mediocrity, it threatens to open out into a more liberating game of exploration and experimentation, but doesn’t quite make the jump. Yes, doing the Just Cause thing of mixing up modes of destruction is still fun. But this series needs more than a few storms to stay relevant and vital. It should take a cue from its own example: Destroy the established order, and find something fresh in the ensuing wreckage.
  5. I’m just at a loss as to how this has happened. Just Causes have been buggy, sure. But they’ve never felt at least six months from finished. I cannot fathom how this wasn’t lengthily delayed, because it’s in such a dismal state. Although that said, even if the bugs and AI were fixed, it would still leave behind a version of Just Cause that barely changes anything you actually do since the third edition, yet has made every aspect of doing it so astronomically more annoying. What went wrong? How did such an established and entertaining series end up in such a quagmire?
  6. Dec 3, 2018
That’s how it goes while you inhabit Just Cause 4. Constant iridescent glimmers of the game it wants to be, tethered by a grappling hook cord to mechanical clunkiness.

Video and key bind options are bad. Game play is less enjoyable than 2 or even 3. It is great if you want to just blow stuff up and cause chaos but the only real neat addition are the balloons. The base takeovers are not as enjoyable since you have to do missions to complete instead of destruction. Don't waste your money until it is patched and discounted. Don't just look at the scores here, also look at Steam ratings. Tells a different story. Full Review »

It is a shoddy console port that has barely functional controls for PC players. The developers expected all PC gamers to use a controller to play, the keyboard setup is a mess. Even the graphics look worse than you see on modern consoles. The gameplay is more generic and repetitive than Just Cause 3, if you can believe it. I almost wasted $90 on the Gold Edition of this lazy port, thank God Steam gives refunds. Full Review »
