An unmissable strategy gem that will unquestionably keep you playing one more contract. If you like mechs or tactical strategy games you’ll have a great time here whether you are a newcomer to the universe or not. BattleTech gets my full recommendation.

The story, the characters and the writing are better than you could hope for. If you are willing to overcome a few technical hiccups, and if you are an unrepentant sci-fi nerd, Battletech can be your new favorite game.

If you are looking for a heavy turn based tactical game with a lot of similarity to X-Com, or if you are a fan of the tabletop version, Battletech is a great game for PC players. Make sure you don’t pass this up.

Battletech's intricate components ultimately foster a fascinating wealth of nuanced systems that build a uniquely strenuous, detailed, and thoroughly rewarding tactical strategy game.

The testing combat is fun, and managing your squad of mercenaries is even better. [June 2018, p.78]

Battletech is a good effort from the people at Harebrained Schemes, and the passion poured into this project is clearly visible from many little details. Still, the game is in need of some more polish, and the AI particularly desperately needs a patch or two. Buy it in any case if you love the original license, or everything mech - related as a whole.

While the story in BattleTech takes some interesting turns, and the combat is slow if serviceable, the game chugs along as playable with occasional moments of greatness. The major issues come from how combat is both too slow at times and too random, plus there are too many numbers to sort through for anyone short of the very dedicated. The structural problems are too ingrained in the game to easily fix, which is unfortunate as there is actually a solid package underneath the problems.

A simple description is "XCOM with giant robots", but even comparing it to that beloved franchise doesn't give the whole picture of what HareBrained Schemes has accomplished in this game. The open-ended campaign is a blast, as you take up mercenary missions for whoever will pay, engage in detailed tactical combat with highly-customizable BattleMechs and salvage or buy ever better equipment and bigger war machines. Then there's the story campaign, which gives you emotional investment and a sense of purpose and accomplishment. And the music, holy cow they really outdid themselves with the music; it gives "Space Opera" a whole new meaning. I hope they make many sequels, and with this IP there's certainly more than enough source material to keep them exploring new stories and new timelines for years to come. Expand

It pulls from the history of previous Battletech and MechWarrior games and brings the same feel as the old MechCommander series. I've played through the campaign once and while I experienced some crashes/bugs that made me learn to save often (F10 saves) they weren't enough to reduce the enjoyment I got from using my giant mechs to blow up and salvage the enemy. I played through 80 hours to complete the campaign and while it likely can be done sooner than that I really am glad I didn't rush it.

Many reviews are stuck on the plodding pace of the combat early on however there are a number of features/views you can turn off that help speed up gameplay even without modding options. The game is built with modding in mind and already mods are coming out, similar to X-Com, that tailor the game experience towards people who want faster combat and fewer cut-scenes. Had the game come out with fewer bugs and a more obvious way to speed up gameplay it would have easily been a 10/10. Probably my favorite game in the past 2 or 3 years.

But otherwise the game is fun to play. I don't think it deserves some of the harsh reviews here.

It does suffer from a big narrative problem, where the story front-loads the ending in first intro sequence to the campaign. We work for the good guys and there is no other option. Unlike some games like venerable Merceneries series for Mechwarrior, where you could opt who do you support, we are railroaded from the very first moment. It is somewhat of a disappointment, but overall not a huge negative.

Now for the mechanics. I really liked the new initiative system, divided into phases which make more sense, giving an option to run forth and cease the moment or react to the surrounding. However there are also mechanics so easy to cheese out most encounters I'm puzzled still how are they considered a thing and feature in current state, namely: stability and concentrated fire. Instead of spreading fire over couple enemies, making the combat even, make the whole team pound one enemy at the time. The penalties they'll get will mean in most cases, either a crit will be scored, a pilot shaken and loose action, or they'll fall due to impact. It is sometimes hilarious to see a huge and mighty Assault mech drop like a sack of potatoes after a round of combined fire, in essence, eliminating him from taking action that round, which is way better then spreading the damage evenly. Not sure if that was an intent, but it is a cheesy tactic which makes encounters look rather silly.

If this game improves it's performance down the line I'll be al for giving it a boost in score, however as of now, it runs terribly.

And so on... In short, this game have all great things to destroy whole fun...
So, before they will fix that - 0/10, gamebraking bugs and almost unplayable... After Shadowrun series, this product is Technical shame...

P.S. - btw, do not upgrade Drivers, game have problems with new Nvidia set...
