Our comprehensive coverage of the TV network upfront presentations this week in New York concludes with a look at The CW's plans for the 2018-19 season. See more upfronts coverage...

The CW

Highlights and notes

  • The biggest news (though it was announced months ago): The CW is expanding its lineup to six nights this fall, with the addition of Sunday programming.
  • Because of that expansion, the network canceled only three shows this season, and ordered more new series than it usually does: five.
  • Two of those newcomers are reboots of shows originally airing on the WB, while another is a spinoff. (Details on all five newcomers are below.)
  • All of the network's fall shows will launch in October. Once again, The 100 and iZombie will be held for midseason, as will Jane the Virgin. This will be the final season for the latter two shows, as well as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
  • Expect another mutli-series "Arrow-verse" crossover event next season—and one that will include the first-ever on-screen appearance of Batwoman, as the city of Gotham factors into the Arrow-verse for the first time.

The CW's new shows at a glance

The five first-year series ordered for the CW's 2018-19 season are detailed below. Pilots rejected by the network this year include an adaptation of Carl Hiaasen's novel Skinny Dip and an adaptation of Iva-Marie Palmer's comedic alien invasion book The End of the World as We Know It (produced by iZombie's Rob Thomas). The CW also, surprisingly, opted not to pick up its planned female-led spinoff from Supernatural (which was to be titled Wayward Sisters).

All AmericanAll American [fka Spencer]
DRAMA Wednesdays at 9p

It's another Greg Berlanti-produced drama, and it's inspired by the life of NFL linebacker Spencer Paysinger. The show centers on a rising high school football star (Daniel Ezra, The Missing) from L.A.'s Crenshaw neighborhood who is recruited to play for the somewhat ritzier Beverly Hills High. Taye Diggs also stars as Spencer's coach. The series comes from April Blair (Into the Badlands, Reign).

CharmedCharmed
DRAMA/FANTASY Sundays at 9p

It's a "feminist" reboot of the fantasy series that ran on the WB from 1998-2006. This Charmed once again centers on three sisters who are witches, though they are different characters (for one thing, their names all start with M instead of P, and one of them is a lesbian), and the setting has been moved from San Francisco to the fictional college town of Hilltowne. Melonie Diaz, Madeleine Mantock, and Sarah Jeffery star. The reboot, which is unrelated to previous attempts to reboot the series in 2013 and 2017, comes from Jennie Snyder Urman, (who previously created the short-lived CW series Emily Owens M.D.) along with her fellow Jane the Virgin writers Amy Rardin and Jessica O’Toole.

In the Dark
DRAMA coming in midseason

It's the closest thing to a comedy among The CW's new shows next season. Produced by Ben Stiller's Red Hour, directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, Search Party), and created by Corinne Kingsbury (a writer on The Newsroom whose other new show, Fam, was just picked up by CBS), the hourlong series centers on a hard-living but "irreverent" blind woman (Perry Mattfeld, Shameless) who thinks she stumbles across the scene of the murder of her drug-dealing friend. When the cops don't believe her story—the body is nowhere to be found when they arrive—she sets out to track down the man's killer herself with the help of her guide dog, Pretzel.

LegaciesLegacies
DRAMA/FANTASY Thursdays at 9p

It's a spinoff from The Originals, itself a spinoff from The Vampire Diaries (which, in turn, was based on a series of novels). Like The Originals (which is about to wrap up its final season), Legacies comes from Julie Plec, and it centers on the next generation of supernatural beings, who are attending The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Danielle Rose Russell reprises her role of Hope Mikaelson—who is the lead character here—while Matt Davis, who played Alaric Saltzman on both previous shows, also stars. (His character's twin daughters are also characters in the new series.)

Roswell, New Mexico
DRAMA/SCI-FI coming in midseason

It's a semi-reboot of Roswell, the cult series which ran for three seasons on both The WB and UPN at the turn of the century. Like the prior show, it's an adaptation of the Roswell High novels by Melinda Metz. In the new series, which centers on slightly older characters this time, the daughter of undocumented immigrants (Jeanine Mason, Grey's Anatomy) relocates to her hometown, where she discovers that her one-time crush (Nathan Parsons, The Originals) is secretly an alien of another sort. (The space kind.) And he's not the only one. This new adaptation comes from Carina MacKenzie, a writer on The Originals.
